Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, USA Jung Huang is one of the authors of the papers (Nature 304:35-39, 1983; Science 221:13481350, 1983) describing the discovery that the oncogene v-sis of simian sarcoma virus (SSV) encodes PDGF-BB, a growth factor. SSV is an RNA tumor virus which causes fibrosacroma in the wooly monkey. The discovery of the growth factor oncogene v-sis was the first to clearly identify the function of an oncogene. This finding has been recognized as one of the most important findings in cancer research in the last few decades. Jung Huang is a pioneer in PDGF research. He played an important role in the early stage of PDGF research. In 1982, he purified PDGF-BB from 20 liters of human platelet-rich plasma and sent it to Dr. Michael D. Waterfield (Imperial Cancer Research Fund, UK), a protein chemist. Using Jung Huang’s purified PDGFBB, Dr. Waterfield obtained the first amino acid sequence of human PDGF-BB. Dr. Waterfield, the first author in the Nature paper (Nature 304:35-39, 1983), was nominated as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1985. Dr. Waterfield did not receive the Nobel Prize. However, this led to the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which was awarded to growth-factor pioneers: Drs. Rita Levi-Montalcini and Stanley Cohen who discovered NGF and EGF, respectively. Jung Huang’s lab was also the first to identify the protein tyrosine kinase activity of the PDGF β-type receptor and aFGF receptor. Together with Dr. Stanley Cohen’s finding of the EGF receptor protein tyrosine kinase activity, the findings of Jung Huang’s lab marked the beginning of the signal transduction research era.
